A new playgroup has started in Marburg. Every Tuesday (except during school holidays) it meets at 9.30 to 11.30 at the Marburg Community Centre at the corner of Edmond and Queen Streets.

Why not come along and join with other parents and toddlers to play and share experiences?

Black Snake Creek Water Quality Issues

In 2003 Ipswich City Council proposed a stables residential development for an area of about 160 ha adjoining Marburg town on the east, south and west. Several public meetings were held, Council agreed that their proposal was flawed, other priorities overtook the proposal and it was put aside for the time being. The area involved was subsequently zoned ‘Stables Residential Investigation Zone’.

Council revisited the proposal in 2009. On behalf of the Marburg and District Residents’ Association, Bob Hampson prepared a ‘Horse Issues’ paper which identified, amongst other things, the salinity of the ground and surface water, the closeness of the groundwater to the surface, probable biological contamination and high levels of sediment in the surface water. Two meetings were held to discuss these issues and at the October 2009 meeting, it was agreed that Ipswich City Council be asked to investigate water quality issues of Black Snake Creek more thoroughly.

Council subsequently engaged consultants who submitted their report (Black Snake Creek Waterway Health and Water Quality Assessment – Stage 1 Report) in September 2011. This was presented to Council in January 2012. Council will now form an advisory panel ‘to inform and support the development of a Management Action Plan for Black Snake Creek’.

New Awards announced for Young People in Marburg District

Since its inception in 2006, the Black Snake Creek Festival, has received excellent community support and generous sponsorship from local and regional business community as well as the Ipswich City Council and the major sponsor of 2011 festival, Energex.

As a result of this support and the hard work of the organizing committee, the festival has enjoyed a successful run which has assisted the Marburg and District Residents Association to continue its work in funding and supporting worthy community causes and individuals in time of need.

In 2011, MDRA decided to set up a Youth & Young Adults Development Program to be funded from proceeds of the Black Snake Creek Festival.

The Marburg and District Residents Association is pleased to announce that this program has commenced; the first step being to establish a set of annual awards (School Based Youth Awards) for presentation to senior students of the Marburg State School.

Congratulations to 2011 winners who were presented with their awards at the Marburg State School’s Presentation Evening. They are Isabella Ostini (Citizenship), Jacob Day (Achievement) and Naomi Shulz (Encouragement).

SHINE AWARD

The Association is now taking the Youth & Young Adults Development Program a step further with the establishment of the Shine Award (MYADP). This is to be awarded twice a year and is aimed at encouraging and assisting youth and young adults to further their endeavours in a chosen field eg academic, cultural, sporting etc.

The Association is inviting young people in the local area to apply for the award which carries a framed citation or trophy, and a cash incentive of $500 to be used in assisting the Shine Awardee to advance their progress in their chosen field. Eligible individuals and groups are encouraged to apply for this award.

Age and residential eligibility requirements apply to the Shine Award.

(a) Applicant must be under 26 years of age throughout the calendar year in which the application is considered i.e. born 1987 or later.

(b) Applicant must be a resident of the town or districts of Marburg, Tallegalla, Haigslea or Glamorganvale.

School Based Youth Awards 2011

December 2011 saw the inaugeration of the Marburg School Based Youth Awards. The Residents’ Association has created these awards to showcase senior students at Marburg State School. There are three categories to be awarded annually: Achievement, Citizenship and Encouragement. MDRA President Greg Farr and Secretary, Wendye Gratton, attended the school awards night to hand awards to Jacob Day for Achievement, Isabella Ostini for Citizenship and Naomi Schulz for Encouragement. The MDRA will work with Marburg State School on an annual basis to make these awards. Awards consisted of a medallion, $50 bursary and the students’ names to be engraved on a trophy that has been presented to the school.

Playgroup visits Marburg

A Playgroup Queensland mobile playgroup will be visiting Marburg this week. They will be at the Marburg Skate Park on Monday 14th November at 9.30am – 11.30am. This is a great opportunity for families to play together in a relaxed and inviting environment.
